Seven Colorado River states submitted a water sharing plan to the Department of Interior. The plan aims to improve drought situations by at dividing up water resources.
The plan is said to help protect 30 million people who depend on the river for drinking water. The cooperative plan is aimed at helping to reduce the threat of water shortages. The plan would allow Colorado and other upper basin states to send less water to Arizona and Nevada in times of drought.
Currently the 1920's "law of the river," applies to river basin states of Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, and Wyoming. These states are required to let 8.23 million acre feet of water per year flow to Nevada, Arizona, and California.
